We Broke Facebook Ads so You Don’t Have to

Most Facebook campaigns fail on the same handful of mistakes. The 10 that bleed budget, and the fix for each, distilled from $20M+ in managed spend.

Struggling with Facebook ads? You’re not alone. Most campaigns fail on a handful of common mistakes, from pulling the plug too early to underestimating creative and funnel strategy.

We’ve run more than $20M in ad spend for brands turning over seven and eight figures. We’ve seen every mistake under the sun, and we’ve fixed them. This is the short version of everything that spend taught us, in one guide. No guesswork, no fluff, just the truth about why your paid ads might be bleeding cash and how to fix it.

It’s the same approach we run for brands spending serious money, laid out here so you can skip the costly mistakes and start scaling profitably. We’ll even connect the dots to the rest of your marketing, so your ads stop living in isolation.

The short version

Most Facebook ads don’t fail on budget. They fail on patience.

  • Give ads room to learn. Judge on your average order value in spend, not a day or two of data.
  • Don’t touch a winner. Editing resets the learning phase; duplicate it and tweak the copy.
  • Feed the algorithm. Spend in line with your price, and keep creative tests clean at ad-set level.
  • Top of funnel is where scale lives. Don’t burn the budget exhausting your retargeting audience.
  • Ads amplify the landing page. If the page converts under 1 percent, no ad will save it.

The ten mistakes, at a glance

Here’s the whole guide in one table. The detail on each is below, but if you only read one thing, read this.

The mistakeThe fix
Judging on a day or two of dataGive it your average order value in spend before you call it
Editing a winning adHands off. Duplicate it, then tweak
Starving a high-ticket productSpend in line with the price, not $10 a day
Cramming creatives into one ad setKeep it lean so every asset gets a fair test
Testing inside CBOTest at the ad-set (ABO) level so you control the spend
Overspending on retargetingMost of the budget goes top-of-funnel
A vague hookMake the first three seconds instantly clear
Sloppy tracking setupTurn on Advanced Matching, add a second tracker at scale
Doubling budgets overnightScale gradually, roughly 10 to 30 percent every few days
Ignoring the landing pageFix the page first. Ads amplify what’s already there

Mistake 1: making decisions too fast

One or two days of data is not enough to decide whether an ad works. You need to give the algorithm breathing room. At a minimum, spend the equivalent of your average order value before you cut or scale. Panic moves kill profitable ads before they ever get a chance. If you’re unsure how to read success properly, here’s how to measure paid advertising effectiveness, and how long paid ads really take to work.

Mistake 2: editing high performers

If an ad is doing well, keep your hands off it. Even small edits can reset the learning phase and wipe out momentum. If you want to make tweaks, duplicate it and change the copy on the duplicate. We cover this mindset in our guide to A/B testing in paid ads.

Mistake 3: under-spending on high-ticket items

If your product sells for $400 but you’re only spending $10 a day, you’re starving the campaign of data. Spend in line with your product price so Meta has enough information to optimise. The same logic drives how you set your paid ads budget in the first place.

Mistake 4: overloading creatives

Too many creatives in one ad set is a silent killer. Meta funnels most of the spend into one or two, leaving the rest untested. Keep ad sets lean so every asset gets a fair shot, and be deliberate about what actually goes into each image or video.

Mistake 5: the wrong campaign structure for testing

Creative testing inside CBO campaigns means Meta calls the shots, not you. For clean tests, run them at the ad-set (ABO) level so you control how the spend is distributed. A controlled test is the only kind that tells you anything true.

Mistake 6: overspending in the middle of the funnel

Retargeting audiences are small and high-intent, but they’re also easy to exhaust. Most of your budget should sit in top-of-funnel acquisition, not middle-funnel overspend. If retargeting still confuses you, here’s what retargeting is and why it matters.

Mistake 7: weak creative and hooks

Your images and videos have to be instantly clear. A vague ad, or a weak hook in the first three seconds, will kill your click-through rate before anyone reads a word. For the deeper fixes, learn why your ads get clicks but no sales, and how to write scroll-stopping ad copy.

Mistake 8: ignoring the technical setup

Not enabling Automatic Advanced Matching on your pixel is leaving data on the table, and correct tracking leads to better optimisation. For higher spenders, a secondary tracking platform is a must, because platform-reported numbers only tell half the story. It’s the same reason we lean on MER, your marketing efficiency ratio, over any single platform’s ROAS.

Mistake 9: scaling too aggressively

Doubling budgets overnight on high-spend campaigns often resets learning and tanks performance. Scale gradually instead, roughly 10 to 30 percent every few days, so the algorithm keeps its footing. It’s one of the habits that separates how high-spending brands scale from everyone else.

Mistake 10: neglecting the landing page

If your site looks unprofessional or converts under 1 percent, ads will not save you. Paid ads amplify what’s already there, good or bad. This is exactly why we pair media buying with conversion-led design to protect your return, and why conversion rate optimisation is half the paid-ads battle.

From the studio The most expensive Facebook mistake I see isn’t in the ad account at all, it’s the itchy trigger finger. An ad has a rough first day, panic sets in, it gets killed, and the one that would have printed money never gets its chance. Running $20M+ in spend teaches you the opposite instinct: give it room, read the real signal, then decide. Boring discipline beats clever tactics almost every time.
How we know this: this list is the short version of what $20M+ in managed ad spend has taught us, across brands turning over seven and eight figures. Every mistake here is one we’ve made, watched, or been hired to clean up. The tactics come from live accounts, not theory. Last verified July 2026.

Facebook ads mistakes FAQs

How long should I run a Facebook ad before deciding?

Long enough for the algorithm to learn. A day or two of data isn’t a verdict. A useful rule of thumb is to spend at least the equivalent of your average order value before you cut or scale, so you’re deciding on signal, not noise.

How much should I spend to test Facebook ads?

Enough for Meta to optimise. If your product sells for hundreds of dollars but you’re spending ten a day, you’re starving the campaign of data. Spend in line with your price point, and keep creative tests clean at the ad-set level.

Should I test creatives in CBO or ABO?

ABO for clean tests. In CBO, Meta decides where the budget goes, so your test isn’t really controlled. Running tests at the ad-set level lets you set the spend per creative and read a fair result.

Why do my Facebook ads get clicks but no sales?

Usually the landing page or the offer, not the ad. Paid ads amplify what’s already there, so if your page converts poorly, more traffic just loses money faster. Fix the page and the offer first.

How fast should I scale a winning campaign?

Gradually. Doubling budgets overnight often resets the learning phase and tanks performance. Raising spend by roughly 10 to 30 percent every few days lets you scale without spooking the algorithm.
