Built to sell, not just show

What an ecommerce build actually covers.

An online store is a website with one job: get people from browsing to paying with as little friction as possible. The design matters, but the structure underneath it decides how many of them make it to the receipt.

What it is

A store, not a brochure.

Collection and product templates, payment gateways, shipping rules, filters and a checkout, designed around how people actually shop. Plus the tracking that shows which products, pages and ads are paying their way.

When it works

A range worth browsing.

Products people search for and a team ready to ship the orders. Collection pages win the big searches and product pages convert the click, so both get built to rank and to sell from launch day.

When it's the wrong tool

A handful of orders a month.

A few sales a month rarely covers a plan fee and a stack of apps, let alone a custom build. For a first store, a simple Shopify setup is the safer bet. We'll say so before you spend the money.

Where stores lose the sale

Stores leak sales in the same three places.

Baymard Institute puts the average cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, and every one of those shoppers had already picked a product. The fix is rarely a redesign. It's a subtraction.

  • Menus three levels deepVague categories send shoppers hunting, and if they can't find it, they can't buy it. Five to seven top-level items, filters and breadcrumbs get them to the product first.
  • A checkout that asks too muchForced accounts and extra steps lose people who had already decided to buy. Guest checkout, fewer steps and the total cost shown early keep them moving.
  • Product pages that don't answerVague descriptions, pixelated photos and no reviews leave shoppers unsure, and unsure doesn't buy. Sharp images, specs, benefits and real reviews do the convincing.

Shopify or WooCommerce

Two good platforms, one right answer.

Aesthetic is a Shopify Partner and builds on WordPress, so there's no reason to sell you one over the other. The honest question is where the hard part of your business sits.

Choose Shopify if

The hard part is selling

  • Lots of orders, real inventory and sales in person as well as online
  • Hosting, security, PCI compliance and a tuned checkout in the monthly fee
  • A structured catalogue that feeds Google Shopping with almost no fuss
  • A team who can run it without a developer on speed dial

Best for stores where fulfilment, stock and payments are the real work

Choose WooCommerce if

Content sells the product

  • Customers find you by reading something first
  • Your design and your checkout, with a plugin for almost anything
  • Complete control over URLs, metadata and schema
  • Lower running costs, as long as the upkeep is managed well

Best for content-first brands and big, bespoke stores

How a store gets built

From catalogue to checkout.

Every project runs through the same process, whether you're a local trade or a national ecommerce brand. A store adds the parts that take the orders, which is why ecommerce scopes higher than the $14,000 starting point, often $30,000 and up.

What a website actually costs
  1. Discovery and catalogue

Who buys, what stops them and how the range should be organised. Categories, filters and product data get planned before anything is designed.

  2. Sitemap and wireframes

Collection pages, product templates and the path to checkout mapped in Figma from your analytics, real user behaviour and sales objections.

  3. Copy that ranks

Collection pages get real copy and clean titles. Products get unique descriptions instead of the supplier's text that every other store is using.

  4. Design and build

Mobile-first layouts on Shopify or WooCommerce, with payment gateways, shipping rules and product uploads set up properly. Fast, because stores are usually the heaviest sites there are.

  5. Tracking and feeds

GA4 and your ad pixels from day one, plus the Merchant Center feed and the policy pages Google checks before your products can show.

  6. Launch and training

Recorded video training so your team can run the store, then domain, plugin and speed support. You don't get dropped at the finish line.

Ecommerce website questions

Asked before every store build.

What store owners ask before they commit to a platform, a budget and a build. Straight answers, from the team that builds them.

Platforms

Do I need Shopify Plus?

Not unless you need to rebuild the checkout. Plus starts around $3,700 a month, and the checkout is the one page you can't fully customise below it. Even Advanced only pays for itself at serious volume or when you need live carrier shipping rates. Until then, a well-built Shopify store on a standard plan does the job.

What does Shopify charge beyond the monthly plan?

Card fees, a gateway surcharge and apps. On Shopify's Australian pricing, card processing starts at 1.75% plus 30c on Basic, and using anyone else's payment gateway adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Each app costs $10 or $20 a month and nobody cancels anything, so a year later the app bill quietly rivals the plan. Here's the full Shopify cost breakdown.

Who owns my store if it's on Shopify?

You own the domain, the content and the brand, but not the platform underneath. Shopify is a subscription to someone else's infrastructure, not an asset you own. Whatever you build on, the domain and every login should sit in your name, not the agency's. Here's what to check before you hire anyone to build it.

Is WooCommerce more work to run than Shopify?

Yes, because you own the upkeep. Hosting, updates, backups and security are yours on WooCommerce, where Shopify bundles them into the monthly fee. The payoff is control, better publishing tools and lower running costs if it's managed well, and maintenance packages mean you never have to touch a thing. Here's Shopify vs WordPress, side by side.

Can you add a store to my existing WordPress site?

Yes, if the site underneath is sound. WooCommerce turns WordPress into a fully customisable store, so a brochure site can start selling without starting over. When the old theme is the problem, we rebuild instead, as we did for Best Buys Furniture, whose stiff template had no ecommerce function at all. Here's how a WordPress website build works.

Can you move my store off Wix or Squarespace?

Yes, and it's the most common site project we take on. Moving a business off a builder it has outgrown is a rescue more than a redesign. Hosted builders keep your content and design inside their platform, so moving off usually means rebuilding the store properly on Shopify or WordPress. Here's how the website builders compare.

The build

What's included in an ecommerce build?

Everything the store needs to take orders, not just the pages. Payment gateways, product uploads, clean categories, filters and shipping rules get set up alongside the design, copy and tracking. Every project wraps with recorded video training, so your team can run the store themselves. Here's what that looked like for Best Buys Furniture.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I change platforms?

Not if the old pages are mapped to the new ones. A move that changes your URLs without redirects can wipe out rankings you spent years earning. So the old product and collection addresses get redirected before launch, not after the traffic drops. Here's how to redesign without losing what works.

How should an online store's menu be organised?

Five to seven top-level items, with filters and breadcrumbs doing the rest. Vague categories and menus three levels deep lose shoppers before they reach a product, and if they can't find it, they can't buy it. Search that actually works covers anyone who already knows what they want. Here's the usability issues that cost stores sales.

What should a product page include?

Sharp images, a unique description, specs, benefits and real reviews. Uncertainty kills the sale, and vague copy, pixelated photos and an empty reviews section create plenty of it. Product schema then tells Google the price, availability and reviews, which can earn rich results in search. Here's how product and collection pages rank.

Do you set up tracking and Merchant Center?

Yes, from day one. GA4 and the ad pixels you need go in at the build, with consent sorted before any data is collected. Merchant Center needs clear returns and refund policies, accurate contact details and prices that match your site exactly, so those get built too. Here's what Google checks before your products can show.

Selling more

How do I cut abandoned carts?

Make the checkout shorter and the total clearer. Baymard Institute puts average cart abandonment at 70.22%, and nearly 1 in 5 of those shoppers leave over a checkout that's too long or complicated. Guest checkout, fewer steps, a progress bar and total costs shown early fix most of it. Here's how conversion rate optimisation finds the leaks.

How should a store work on a phone?

Like it was designed there first, because a phone is where most shopping now happens. Responsive layouts, real-device testing and thumb-friendly buttons are the baseline. Speed matters as much as layout: Google found 53% of mobile visits are abandoned if a page takes longer than three seconds to load. Here's how custom builds compare with templates.

What makes shoppers trust a new store?

Proof, clarity and policies they can find. Real reviews, accurate contact details and a returns policy answer the doubts that stop a first order. Stanford's web credibility research found people judge a site's credibility on visual design alone, so a dated store loses trust before anyone reads a word. Here's how trust signals lift conversions.

Which email flows should a new store launch with?

Five: welcome, post-purchase, browse abandonment, abandoned cart and winback. Welcome is your highest-converting message, and flows like welcome and abandoned cart can earn from the first subscribers who hit them. Most Shopify brands run them on Klaviyo, and every flow ends with a click back to your store. Here's the five Shopify flows, set up properly.
